Be kind and Compassionate!

Daily Blessings - Kids journal

Bible Verses:Ephesians 4:32

Date April 23, 2009

Today, I had to work from home as I had to attend a meeting early in the morning to accommodate the people from the east. Usually, on Thursdays, I drop the kids and my husband picks them up from the school. Since I was home, I picked up the kids. As I was driving towards home, I noticed few birds were sitting on the street. As the cars approached them, most of the birds flew away. There was this one bird that looked like a seagull didn’t move an inch with all the 'buzzing' cars around it. My anxiety grew as I was driving closer and closer to the bird. I was hoping that the bird would fly away, but it didn’t. With the last minute decision to avoid hitting the bird, I turned my big van to the left forgetting that I was moving the car onto oncoming traffic. Thank God…There were no cars on the opposite side of the road. Once I realized my mistake, I was able to quickly straighten the van back .

I was thinking aloud ‘God, please don’t let the bird be hit'. When all these things were going on, my kids were watching from the backseats with their eyes wide open. I looked through the side mirror to make sure the bird flew away or at least not hit. But, to my amazement, it looked like the bird was still on the street somewhat limping or slowly walking. Since it was a 35 to 40 miles street, I couldn't really tell if anything happened to the bird. My daughter asked me quickly ‘Mom, did you crush the bird?’. I said, ‘No baby, but I hope the birdy is not hurt….Can you please pray for the bird?’. My son started praying immediately. He said ‘Lord, please help the birdy not to be hurt’. I thought to myself, ‘what a simple and powerful prayer’!. Before I finished my thought, My daughter started praying ‘Lord, please help the bird not to be hurt, especially if it has a nest and the little chicks are waiting for their mother to bring food , please help the birdy to go back to the chicks’. For a few seconds, I didn't know how to react to such a lovely prayer! It really brought tears to my eyes…. It touched my heart and soul! What a compassionate heart for an 8 year old…Right there, I knew in my heart that God must have heard those prayers and looked down and smiled at my kids…

Lesson I learned:

The scripture says to be kind and compassionate to one another. As far as I know, it only talks about human beings. But, my daughter went one step beyond and showed compassion for those unseen little chicks. Children are so simple minded and so loving. No wonder, Jesus told us to be like 'child like'. I like the way KJV describes
Ephesians 4:32 : And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another....

What a beautiful word 'tenderhearted'!...
